Should government play a role in controlling the internet?

Internet is on of the greatest tool mankind have ever invented. With internet now ,communications ,education ..e.t.c have all been made easier for people to acces. However internet also gives us a threat to our kids, where they can easily access to pornography, where child molester can have advantanges. Considering all the benefits and disadvantanges of the internet. Should the our governments play a role in controlling internet or do you think doing so would take our freedom of speech away ?Should government play a role in controlling the internet?
Don't give any more monitoring powers to the Government and

don't undermine the responsibility of parents to monitor the access their children have on the internet.Should government play a role in controlling the internet?
Government should not control the Internet since it is a free highway for knowledge and information. What governments can do is to monitor the web for any unscrupulous websites to protect its citizens.
NO!

Read this, I recieved it from E-Bay:

Dear ******,

As you know, I almost never reach out to you personally with a request to get involved in a debate in the U.S. Congress. However, today I feel I must.

Right now, the telephone and cable companies in control of Internet access are trying to use their enormous political muscle to dramatically change the Internet. It might be hard to believe, but lawmakers in Washington are seriously debating whether consumers should be free to use the Internet as they want in the future.

Join me by clicking here -- http://www.ebaymainstreet.com/netneutrality -- to send a message to your representatives in Congress.

The phone and cable companies now control more than 95% of all Internet access. These large corporations are spending millions of dollars to promote legislation that would allow them to divide the Internet into a two-tiered system.

The top tier would be a ';Pay-to-Play'; high-speed toll-road restricted to only the largest companies that can afford to pay high fees for preferential access to the Net.

The bottom tier -- the slow lane -- would be what is left for everyone else. If the fast lane is the information ';super-highway,'; the slow lane will operate more like a dirt road.

Today's Internet is an incredible open marketplace for goods, services, information and ideas. We can't give that up. A two-lane system will restrict innovation because start-ups and small companies -- the companies that can't afford the high fees -- will be unable to succeed, and we'll lose out on the jobs, creativity and inspiration that come with them.

The power belongs with Internet users, not the big phone and cable companies. Let's use that power to send as many messages as possible to our elected officials in Washington. Please join me by clicking here right now to send a message to your representatives in Congress before it is too late. You can make the difference.

Thank you for reading this note. I hope you'll make your voice heard today.

Sincerely,

Meg Whitman

No, it will be much worse. Take a look at what has already happened to other countries. The first banned website in India was Yahoo! Groups!!

Enjoy your freedom while you still can! :)
I think that having the government control the internet completely, would have more disadvantages than advantages. I do think that because of the nature of some of the site (porn, adult content) and the number of minor children that surf the net, that there should be some kind of law or statute to keep kids from being able to access them.
No. How else would we plot to over throw it?

jk.
No.

People should be responsible for their actions. People should be independent.

People should be responsible for what they do to themselves. When they do something to each other, that is where government comes in.

No.
They are controlling everything already, even the internet in a certain way and they don't care much about pornography.

I think it is and should actually be our own responsibility, we should teach our kids ourselves what is wrong and right.

And not what is making the most money, like the government is doing.
nooooooooooooooo because he can broke the low
in my opinion, the government should do something to the internet Maybe.they can play a role just like the pliceman but less fiercely
NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!鈥?and that is all I have to say about that
they do more than you know already..and dosent the gov have enough control over our lives already? in the laws and taxes we have to pay?

Thats as bad as censorship. If we allow the gov to control the internet it would be like burning books on the whitehouse steps,I want my child to be free to do as much research on anything his heart desires, its my job as a parent to guide him and protect him.

And theres always parental control,,As parents its our job to keep tabs on where our children go and the things they see on the net, Why give that right to the gov?
This question is complicated.

Using internet, terrorists and finance criminals (also pedophiles) can easily obtain their purposes.

But we know that governments are afraid of internet freedom of speech and governments used often a single criminal event to obtain a general control on internet.
I know that the Internet was once only used by the government and I believe it exist because of the government.

I do believe that at some point parents really should take a more active role in raising their children. For example, monitoring their children's usage on the Internet, blocking websites where predators lurk for younger children.

I don't know what role the government could take with out censorship and breaking the freedom of being an American.

Do I think it is sick that there are child molester on line luring children YES!! But at what point is the government protecting our youth consider breaking the amendment. Honestly it's a very controversial debt. What do you think?
The government should be responsible for prosecuting criminals on the internet (child pornographers, etc.) just as they do in the real world.
yes; The internet is open to abuse by unscrupulous people and it needs to be controlled.

The only people who would fear this are those who have something to hide.
goverments shouldnt play a role in the interent, just look at the chinese version of google, they censor everything that they believe goes against the goverment. However I believe at this moment the USA controls all the web page names, there supposed to hand this power to an independent organisation
