Is there a way for my roomate to control my internet speed so they get more? on broadband &/or cable modem....

i think i get jipped.....how can i check? Is there a way for my roomate to control my internet speed so they get more? on broadband %26amp;/or cable modem....
there are ways to set ';quotas'; on bandwidth, but unless your roommate is a networking major, I doubt they've done anything like that. How is your network set up? are you both sharing a broadband connection through a router? If you're sure your computer is not to blame for your slow connection, maybe your roommate is downloading files on a peer2peer network and taxing all of your bandwidth. Is there a way for my roomate to control my internet speed so they get more? on broadband %26amp;/or cable modem....
you really need to know what your doing to set quotas on bandwitdth, my best guess would be the same as previous post. check your mate is not downloading loads of stuuf, using bitcomit or other peer 2 peer software

Well, it depends on what browser you are using. If you're using Firefox then you can go to the firefox homepage and there are applications you can install to set the controls.

Hope this helps. :)
go to the control panel on windows vista and you should be able to find it
Windows Vista has built-in parental controls. Just check out the Control Panel and look for Parental Controls.

  • Controlling Internet Speed with Scheduling capability?

I'm looking to control internet speed to a crawl at certain time to discourage someone to use internet. Does anyone know an app that can do that? For example, at 9:00 to 3:30, set bandwith to 8 kpbs.

Thanks.Controlling Internet Speed with Scheduling capability?
    No, not change internet speed.

But there are systems that will limit connections to certain times. (Look for parental control)

Also, many routers can be set to only connect at certain times. You can block any access to the router with a password so no one can override it.

Lost Internet Options in Control panel?

When I open the Control Panel and double-click the Internet Options icon nothing happens. I tried to open it in Safe Mode but nothingLost Internet Options in Control panel?
You can also get to it through Internet Explorer, via the Tools menu. Does that not work either? You can also try clicking Start %26gt; Run, paste the following: inetcpl.cpl

Then click OK. Either way it sounds like you need to reinstall IE:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.asp鈥?/a>Lost Internet Options in Control panel?
I don't no why it won't open in Control Panel. Try right clicking the Internet Explorer E on the desktop or start menu then click properties. That will give you the Internet options menu box you are looking for.

Good luck I hope this helps some
    I can't imagine it's really gone, but you can access the same thing through internet explorer itself. Just click ';Tools'; and then ';Internet Options';
If you haven't been fiddling with windows internal programs it might be a virus or spyware that is causing the internet options box not to display.

Otherwise, I'd try re-installing Internet Explorer. You can either download the latest version (IE7) or try going to add/remove programs in Control Panel, then select Windows Components on the left hand menu, wait for them to load, then uncheck internet explorer. Next restart windows and after its booted up again, go back to the add/remove windows components section and this time tick the box next to internet explorer. This will effectively re-install it.
You can also access Internet Options from Intrnet Explorer by clicking on Tools
Try opening it from your browser, if it still doesn't work then reinstall IE, Firefox or what ever browser you use.

OBAMA Can Take Control Of The INTERNET?

i really didn't think it was possible for any one person to control it, is this story just BS or is it legit??

http://www.weaselzippers.net/blog/2009/0鈥?/a>OBAMA Can Take Control Of The INTERNET?
It's hard to take a website seriously when it peppers its 'stories' with words like 'libtards'.

The Cnet story is pretty basic. In the case of a national emergency (like another 9/11 or other attack), the president, no matter who he or she may be, can limit internet traffic in the US to only those systems deemed critical. Just like on 9/11, all non-military and non-critical air traffic was grounded. This only affects computers in the US, not the internet at large. It also makes perfect sense. If your infrastructure is under attack, you need a way to isolate it and recover. It's basic disaster recovery planning.OBAMA Can Take Control Of The INTERNET?
The bill exists. But it's not really much different than existing powers the President has. In a state of national emergency, the President has the power to do all sorts of interesting things in the private sector. He or she can nationalize industries, or declare martial law, or even stifle freedom of speech through national security letters (this was popular during the Bush administration).

Also, there are certain private sectors where the government requires government-cerfitied personnel to be employed. A good example is radio communications systems. These require licensed personnel to be on hand at all times during operation [1]. The rationale behind the licensed radio operator system is the same as the proposed internet security licensing. It's to make sure that if something goes wrong on a vital national communications network, that there's someone qualified on hand to take care of the problem.

As for the ';taking control of the internet'; nonsense. It's just that. Nonsense. First of all, a huge part of the internet lies outside the United States. The US government has no jurisdiction over those computers.

The proposed bill (note that this is not yet law) would allow the President to call for the termination of network access for machines that pose a threat to national security. So if North Korea were to hack into a bunch of private sector computers in the US and use them to launch a cyber warfare attack on US government systems, then the government could terminate the network access of the affected systems. These sorts of attacks are very popular in Korea, China, and other far-east nations. While the US has not yet been the victim of such an attack, it's probably only a matter of time. It appears this bill is designed to pre-empt such an attack by putting in security measures to stop it.

The US relies heavily on the internet for commerce and national security. Because it is such a vital part of our national infrastructure, then it only makes sense that the US government have some limited tools to protect the integrity of the very large part of the internet that lies within its boarders.

I'm pretty liberal (a ';libtard'; as the article's author might say). And the reason that I'm not ';up in arms'; is that not all us libtards are completely blind to the prospect of national security. I have no problem with FISA or even with some parts of the Patriot Act. What I do oppose is the abuse of such powers. This seems like a reasonable request for power by the executive branch of the government. I appreciate that it's being discussed and debated during a time of relative peace (not in the wake of a direct attack on our nation, as was the case with the Patriot Act). It's taking the proper steps through the legislative process and makes no attempt to hide what it is.

Maybe it's granting the President too much power. Maybe not. But it doesn't seem entirely unreasonable to me. In fact, I like the prospect of the President calling up a telco and saying, ';You need to shut down computer X's internet connection,'; then I do the current alternative: Nationalize the telecommunications industry and then order the computer's access terminated. That just seems like overkill, doesn't it?
No he can't, all he can do is shut it down...

So in case of a ';Cyber-Emergency'; he can shut it down.

What a load of Bull ****. The real purpose of this bill is to give the government more power over the people, there is absolutely no practical or strategical purpose for it.

The new bill would give the U.S. Government control of the operating of Internet Service Providers.
I've heard and read about this too.I'm not sure he could actually ';control'; the Internet, maybe nationalize it.Perhaps make it so we could only get propaganda online. You know, like abccbsnbc.

Seriously though, I do think this is a very real possibility. The idea that a large number of people who don't support the Administration could get together and formulate a plan for protest (or something else) is a little more than they are willing to accept.Who knows what could happen.Heck, I had my doubts about the last election, but it went on even though I think the outcome was planned.
its total BS no body has the control of the internet, since the only way to control the internet is control the backbone connection, but even if that was taken down.. local servers would still work.

since he would need to have control over thousands of servers..
the nsa/fbi/local police have been able to do what they want with the internet and phone service for years and years with or without warrant this bill seeks to legalize those illegal actions...democracy or hypocrisy
dude the internet doesnt belong to any1

no1 can shut it down, except the company providing it

but that only shut down people using that company's internet
    thats Bullshit, Plain and Simple

Any device that is ';IP enabled'; can be controlled over the internet. Using your webcam example above you could look at www.axis.com they make some of the best webcams around.

If you had an IP enabled webcam connected to your PC you could enable your firewall to ';port forward'; to the IP enabled camera and see/control it's functions.

Should Obama control the internet ?

No, but he will try, The democrats are about big government- they love to control every aspect of your life, where the government comes in the government wants to control, If he gained control of internet answers would be shut down, there is to much negative opinions of him here. Plus he don't like us visiting Rasmussen Reports to look at the Daily president tracking poll and see how his numbers have plunged from a 40 plus to in the negatives now go see for your self. From the manual:

    ';You can connect the projector to one compute source and one video source at the same time. Then you use the buttons on the projector or remote control to switch between them.';

There is no mention of controlling the projector with any kind of computer connection; only that you can view computer images with the computer.

no, the internet belongs to the world
    Wait a minute.

Without sounding like a paranoid soul, do you think that the powers that be will try to control the Internet?

The internet is a free-thinker鈥檚 medium in which one can explore and discover the truth. I especially think that at some people with enough money or Churches will try to repress the information one can obtain in the years to come as means of control. The history of religion has tried to hide real knowledge or one's ability to research information. What do you think?Without sounding like a paranoid soul, do you think that the powers that be will try to control the Internet?
You're not paranoid. There are many that want to regulate the internet. There's already countries with restrictions on what they can see and cannot.Without sounding like a paranoid soul, do you think that the powers that be will try to control the Internet?
I think there are too many users around the world who are very good at hacking and using malicious logic, and any attempt to control the internet short of turning it off would fail.
    ';try';?

Look at China. Totally controlled. It's already happening in places all over the world........
they've been doing it all along, just take alook at who and what OWNs the media, and their profiganda.....

    they already are
no. but i wouldn't put it past them to try to monitor it completly
The internet was created by the US Army. If anyone were going to ';control'; the information, I'm sure they already would have done it.

Blair calls for Chinese-style government control of the internet in UK?

Apparently Mr Blair, as a kind of final 'farewell gift' is determined to enforce government control on the internet in the UK, to basically destroy free speech and regulate everything we see and do, in the style of the internet in China which is essentially cut off from the rest of the world.

Can you believe this? Has this man not done enough damage to this country for several lifetimes already?

blair will damage britain as much as possable before he goes, what else do you expect the enemy of british freedom to do.your dna is to be given to e.u. countries, now thats what i call surrender, it gives them loads of proper ganda when we fall out with them, is there nobody in the police or military with the bottle to arrest this rotten traitor, and bring him to justice.
The fools in our country will likely vote Labour in again:

the Romans had bread %26amp; circuses, which kept the plebs happy ('til the 'barbarians' invaded and stopped glaiatorial combat and other such 'civilised' behaviour); we have sex, soaps, booze %26amp; boob jobs as the sop for the average Brit, who is too lazy to realise the Britain that was worth living in has been destroyed by the Blair-faced Liar ansd Brown the Clown, couldn't care less -- until the EU ends our independence. Vote Labour!
This is rich given the fact that when New Labour came into power in 1997 Blair's government quickly became masters of spin, using the media as a tool of hype to whip up a frenzy of positive attention towards itself. Now the attention is not so ';positive'; he wants a gagging order!!!A self-indulgent, deluded man!!!!

Is this a warning of things to come, when he sells us out to the EU and then becomes President of the European Union? I fear we will never be rid of this awful man...
Blair is a dweeb. Karen said it all and said it best!
China spends Millions in making sure they get no outside Influence, They Spend Billions on Attack Information against other governements. Would you condider letting the BBC Air All Islamic anti west news 24 hours a day? How about 24 /7 Chinese Anti British stations? Freedom of speech Yes but what of calculated dis information attacks funded by you enemies? The Nazi's tried and scceeded in some instances of that during WW2 remember the Cambridge fiasco!
This sort of thing ought to be brought more into the open. A fine site exists where you can ask the question, debate the issue, vote and find out what the rest of the country or indeed the world thinks about it.
Many people find it hard to believe that under all the spin and gloss of New Labour they are still socialists. Blair would in reality love to control all our little pleasures and before anyone says Brown is different we'll soon find out that he is just the same. Socialism is not about the liberty of the individual it's about the right of the state to control.
yep the internet is the last form of defence lets hope people dont let it happen. like the EU is the model for the NAU , china is the model for the new world order these lucifarian freaks will impose , wake up people .
That poor man. As he grows old, Tony Bliar's dementia is getting worse. Lately he has been sprouting a lot of tonterias and hot air. Just ignore him.

He has never understood China and does not know how it works. Neither does Mandy and the lot of them. They have their way to hold their country together. Tony's way of holding ours together has not worked and he's clutching at straws.
';We must silence those who would conspire to restrict our freedom of speech'; - Apocryphally attributed to Stalin but so appropriate to the traitors at Westminster.

This is just what to expect from this tool of the American right wing religious idiots, all he wants on the internet is the religious trash and the descent back into the dark ages where relgion ruled by fear and anyone who disagreed ended up very dead. But Brown in no better he is just another tool of the Americans.
It just gets better and better! Soon they will be telling us what to think.....Camera's , smoking bans, spy planes More and more like big brother everyday!
    Oh that guy has to go! He's not even trying to cover it behind some excuse of ';protecting our children from porn.';

I'm not even British and I'm outraged for you, because of all the damage our president has done to our rights in the US

Where can I get an IP (as in Internet Protocol) controlled dimmer switch?

I'm trying to find out where I can get a dimmer switch that can be controlled via TCP/UDP packets. What I'd like to do find some way to control lights from the computer, somewhat inexpensively.

I'd probably even settle for an IP controlled motor that I could pair with a normal dimmer switch.

Any advice is welcome!Where can I get an IP (as in Internet Protocol) controlled dimmer switch?
You probably won't find a TCP/UDP dimmer switch. I would try looking for an RS23/422/485 serial controlled switch. The link below is for a kit you can build yourself to do what you want, but it requires a decent knowledge of electronics and the appropriate tools. The other answerer has a good point, but PLC controllers, like Crestron, are typically very expensive. I would guess you won't have much luck finding a commercially available product, but good luck.Where can I get an IP (as in Internet Protocol) controlled dimmer switch?
You could try a PLC (programmable logic controller) They are not too terrible expensive and I believe they do make them IP controllable. You would be able to use the PLC as a group of switches to control all of your lighting.

Why is internet explorere blocking active x control?

something went wrong internet is automatically blocking active x when it's suppose to let me download it or somethingWhy is internet explorere blocking active x control?
For starters, Internet Explorer blocks a website from using an ActiveX control on your computer if the website tries to use the ActiveX control in a way that might not be safe.

    Note: ';You should always be cautious about allowing websites to install or use ActiveX controls on your computer. If an ActiveX control is not essential to your computer activity, try to avoid installing it.';

If you are trying to decide whether to install a particular add-on or ActiveX control, ask yourself these questions:

鈥?Do you trust the website providing the control?

Don't install an ActiveX control unless you trust the website that is providing it.

鈥?Do you know what the control is for and what it will do to your computer?

The website should tell you what this add-on or ActiveX control is for and provide any special details you need to know before you install it. If this information is not available, you should not install the control.

If you still want to install or run the ActiveX control, click the Information bar, and then follow the prompts. Why is internet explorere blocking active x control?
your pre-set settings (which can be altered by you) are stopping the active x from an unknown site or unregulated site. Some sites are suspect and contain viruses, this is why it is blocking them. If you are confident the internet site is legitimate, when you have logged on, click on tools, in top right hand side and follow instructions.
Try using a different web explorer. I suggest Firefox. It is alot more structurally stable then IE and can handle web pages alot better.
That is becasue download Active X can give you viruses, so it blocks most.
    Because it hates you

So am I still a conspiracy nut? I posted Obama trying to control internet question the other night?

    http://news.cnet.com/8301-13578_3-103200鈥?/a>

I was labeled as a conspiracy guy by people who love Obama. I do not like Bush patriot power not do I like the executive branch using Czars and emergency control to strip my constitutional powers as a US citizen. So am I still a conspiracy nut? I posted Obama trying to control internet question the other night?
    How tragically hip.

The ANSWERS %26amp; opinions expressed by the hip Obama-supporters are our own best evidence of how badly as a society WE THE PEOPLE failed them.

I am NOT going to blast them this time as I generally would do. I am simply begging you all to step back and independently look at some history, current events %26amp; your federal government.

There is no ';conspiracy theory'; here whatsoever. Consider the facts.

    THE FAILINGS:

    I) For the last 96 years WE THE PEOPLE as a majority did not stay vigilant with what Congress %26amp; the POTUS were actually doing. Voting the un-populars out after the fact and new ones in was at best a ruse. Not that there was not some good legislation which occurred during this time. The Executive %26amp; Congressional branches of our government have gradually usurped power never granted them. Most now act with impunity and believe that they control us. WE THE PEOPLE became too trusting, not just in these elected leaders, but in our democratic voting process, which had %26amp; continues to be insidiously corrupted. Yet many continue to repeat the mistake that VOTING for the other team (whoever it happens to be) will make the difference (You hope).

Our involvement in our federal government was never supposed to have fallen away as we've allowed it.

II) Beginning with just the major daily newspapers and rolling right up with all major networks %26amp; the internet, the Main Stream Media in the USA %26amp; in other nations is currently owned by or is directed by a majority of interests from the Rothschild family legacy. They have acted in lock step with our corrupted politicians but in such a deceptive way that many have failed to realize the omissions of fact, scripted lies and bias. WE THE PEOPLE should have not accepted their delivery of the news as silently nodding ';yes-men'; as we have. It has cost us dearly. Again, we were too trusting.

III) This for me is the worst of it: The calculated misinformation presented to WE THE PEOPLE in our urban densely populated public schools gradually over the last 100 years. There is an irrefutable link to the Rockefeller Foundation which began in 1909 with what today is known as the U.S. Department of Education. What many of you don't know is that a child of the founder of that Foundation, Grand Daddy Rockefeller, became a Rothschild legacy through marriage. Both the Founder %26amp; the Child (children really) although confirmed capitalists are confirmed Fabian Socialists as well. They whole heartedly believe that the only way to preserve %26amp; increase their wealth %26amp; power is through a Fabian (i.e. very gradual) method of introduced oligarchic socialism %26amp; Marxism. It is this Foundation %26amp; its principals who have funded the corruption which we have allowed to happen in our schools - the misrepresentation of Marxism, Communism %26amp; Socialism, the dumbing-down of America in short from a cultural perspective as well.

The whole matrix of this greatest scam ever played upon a nation or society just seems too fantastic to be believed by many because, well for two reasons. As I've pointed out, these folks (we) have been brainwashed quite literally over a period of nearly 100 years. Secondly, many of these people still believe that fundamentally we can change things through the voting process.

What you all fail to realize is that all the majority of the voting has done, since 1964, has changed how much faster the USA will collapse into a New World Order, or by which means that match the political party in power closer to their supposed platform in order to keep the masses deceived from seeing the truth, such as in Bush's case we witnessed the artfully contrived 9/11, the Afghanistan %26amp; Iraq wars (which still profits the Rothschild international banking cartel in the trillions of dollars) and the economic collapse of 2008 where he spent your money to buy %26amp; bail-out failed financial institutions (sold to the masses as ';helping Americans)...if it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck %26amp; looks like a duck, well gee whiz, then it must be a fascist/socialist/Marxist duck all in one!

Millions %26amp; millions of us are waking up to this %26amp; it still may be too late.

    It's easier for many of the rest to accept the status quo of ';there really are some very serious domestic problems out there and Obama is trying to take care of it....';

You are merely playing into the deception which you've bought into since you were born. Sure many of those problems do exist, but they can be better addressed without hybrid socialism which will eventually cause you to surrender your remaining freedoms %26amp; liberties which you take for granted.

DO NOT TAKE MY WORD FOR THIS. LOOK AROUND YOU. INDEPENDENTLY DOCUMENT IT FOR YOURSELVES. IT'S THE ONLY WAY YOU'LL EVER SEE THE TRUTH, DESPITE SPARKY PATIENTLY AND COMPASSIONATELY DRUBBING YOU OVER THE HEAD WITH IT.

    (2) any matter relating to, or involving the use of, computers or computer networks...

Some of these people think if you say any thing about Obama that isn't a praise you are a racist, a right wing loon, a nazi and etc...

It is a conspiracy theory if it doesn't align with their partisan loon view point.

There are serious issues affecting America today. These non sequitirs are wasting everyone's time.

I've had the best of luck using logmein.com. You'll have to install a tiny little add on that sits in the system tray by the clock. When you go online to monitor a computer, all you do is log in and remote over that computer. The free version allows you to remotely control however many computers you want and the account never expires. I use it quite frequently.Internet remote control software?

Who do you think should control/own the Internet? It can be a person, company, country, etc.Who should control the internet?
    None.

Because primarily, the main purpose of the internet is for sharing information. This means if there are any governing bodies, THEY WILL CENSOR information as they see fit.Who should control the internet?
Firstly, I should control the internet :)

Because I'm not into business and advertising. I will only provide the masses with full access to all the multimedia downloads that they want, and yes, including Porn...sorry no child porn, that's the only thing that'll be outlawed on my Internet.

I believe that the internet should be free and fast. So Vote for me to control the internet. If I take office I'll provide each of you with 100Mbps (OC-24) SONET fibre optic connections or higher and make it free for the masses.

If I control the internet, expect to find what you want, oh and did I mention that if I'm elected Google will be my vice President :)

YAAAY! Vote for ME to control the Internet :)
No one it is a pool that's full of information that everyone should be able to view. If someone owned it they would try to push what they want people to see or buy from them only.

  • If you were against the Patriot Act, why are you in favor of Obama having emergency control over the internet?

They like it now because Obama does.If you were against the Patriot Act, why are you in favor of Obama having emergency control over the internet?
Because the Patriot act did not empower the federal judiciary to act as a counter to Bush's abuses.

I am still against the Patriot act and I am against Obama not having control, because unlike Republicans I can think more than one administration ahead.

Despite all logic and reason, history says that a Republican will be in the white house again, so as long as the bill allows the judiciary to review and counter as needed then I'm for it.

It probably doesn't (even though you have yet to provide a link.)If you were against the Patriot Act, why are you in favor of Obama having emergency control over the internet?
That's a straw man argument. You are assuming something that simply isn't true. I can be against both or for both. For the record, I am against both.

This isn't Obama's plan though. He didn't push for this legislation. 3 Democrats and 1 Republican got together and decided that they want this bill to go through. I think they are seeing this as something similar to the Emergency Broadcast System or something.
    Because it makes it safer.

    Right from the bill:

To ensure the continued free flow of commerce within the United States and with its global trading partners through secure cyber communications, to provide for the continued development and exploitation of the Internet and intranet communications for such purposes, to provide for the development of a cadre of information technology specialists to improve and maintain effective cyber security defenses against disruption, and for other purposes.CommentsClose CommentsPermalink
Who said I was in favor of it?

But if the choice is a takeover of the governments computers by, say, Korean spy services, then I'm in favor of whatever means it takes to protect our secrets.

The Patriot Act was something that was enacted to give the government more latitude into prying into American citizens private lives, ostensibly it would only apply to those thought to be security risks, and, they told us, not American citizens, that kind of power is a little too heady to allow. If they wanted to wiretap, they could apply for a warrant three days later than when they started, so the idea that they could just do it was unsettling, after all, three days is plenty of time for someone to fill out paperwork, why the need for abandoning any pretense at all, unless they didn't want any one to know who they were wiretapping, and that's not at all what we want or need.

What they did end up doing was not what they said they were going to do. The ability to listen in on citizens conversations is in direct contradiction to the Constitution, the (supposed) control of the internet in case of enemy attack isn't.
Please do not assume that because I am an Obama supporter, and a critic of the Patriot Act, that I think this bill is a good idea.

At this point it is just a bill with two sponsors. It is being criticized from all sides.

I do agree that there needs to be much more cyber security in this country.
I am a Democrat that is for the Patriot Act and I support the Cyber security Act of 2009. I am also aware that in the event of a national emergency the President can interrupt the internet any way.
Personally, I am not and have never been in favor of any legislation like the (un)Patriot(ic) Act which gives the President wide sweeping powers that are easily abused.

Again, enjoy the monster you helped create.
I think the better question would be, if you were for the patriot act, why are you against obama having emergency control over the internet?
One Term Barry voted for the PATRIOT Act renewal in 2006.
I'm not in favor of either. Besides FEMA can already do it.

How can filmmakers control the information that appears on the Internet? Should they take these steps? Why or?

Take wad step? How can filmmakers control the information that appears on the Internet? Should they take these steps? Why or?
You mean like gossip about films that are currently in production? How can they control gossip which is not based on any facts, but only speculation? And why should they? The publicity is good enough that they should not care, but may put out a press release saying which speculations are false, which half-true, and which are on the mark. They usually just let it all swirl around them, generating interest. The other thing they can do, of course, is ';plant'; rumors with friends, so that dis-information mixes with mis-information and real but clandestinely obtained information. How can filmmakers control the information that appears on the Internet? Should they take these steps? Why or?
Yes. Imagine that they don't and children get into the webpage... if there's not anything unsuitable it's ok... but if there isn't... blech
The best thing about the internet is noone can stop what is there, so no. You can try, but its like asking people not to talk..

Do you think mobile phone and Internet technology has given you more control/freedom?

Don't get me wrong i love the net and the convenience of a mobile phone, but back in the day 1989 i had a mobile [the brick] it was great i could call anyone from anywhere[more control]but now everyone has mobile and internet accsess, everyone can call me [less freedom]web cams everywhere in london ,my scence of freedom and control feels like its evaporating.Do you think mobile phone and Internet technology has given you more control/freedom?
I have come late to technology and refused to have a mobile until about 2005. It does mean you are at the beck and call of people and we are losing the ability to write a proper letter or phone someone on our land line. this statement doesn't apply to me I hasten to add.

I manage a charity and if you had told me, even 5 years ago, that I would do most of my communicating via email; I would have said you were mad but, of course, that is exactly what has happened. However, I do still get our Administrator to type letters, especially to our clients. They are older people and technology has largely passed them by and that is a shame.

Great question by the way. I am going to give it a star!!Do you think mobile phone and Internet technology has given you more control/freedom?
i always think it makes life easier but thinking about it, its probably more complicated now and impossible to just 'get away'...i was only a young teen when mobiles became popular and cant even remember what life was like without mobile phones being such a major part of our lives.which is kinda weird:/
    Ya!!
I usually have my mobile turned off unless I want to take calls. We managed before mobiles and people who have them constantly stuck to their ear annoy me. Cameras in town get on my nerves too. The only cameras that seem to get a decent pic are the ones on the roads where a fine is involved. What worries me most is the smoking ban and the proposed tax on fatty food. I have recently stopped smoking but I am not convinced when we are told of the dangers of passive smoking. Not enough evidence in my opinion. Also if people want to stuff their faces why should I care? Don't we g live too long already?
true when u have it and others have it to the sense of pride is lost but hey act a lil aloof when u want ur space and make ur folks and kins understand u need space to for ur self that will help more i think !
good question i didnt want a mobile and didnt buy one for years , only got one about 5 years ago and i wish i hadnt now

How do i put parental control on my internet?

ok so i have a little nephew that uses a psp to use my wireless internet, today he asked me to put a movie into his psp and i did , but i found some porn movies in it, i think he downloaded them from my internet, hes just 8 yrs old, he shouldnt be lookin at that crapHow do i put parental control on my internet?
Web filtering software like K9 Web Protection will only block objectionable content on the computer it has been installed on, i.e. it won't help in your case.

You'd neet to apply some filtering directly on the wireless router (don't know if any routers support this) or set up a gateway computer that filters the traffic *before* it reaches the wireless router. How do i put parental control on my internet?
K9 Web Protection is the best free parental control and monitoring software.

K9 Web Protection is easy-to-use Parental Control and Internet filtering software that helps parents protect their children online. K9 Web Protection has the ability to block adult, porn and other offensive content, prevent spyware infections, and monitor visited sites on any Internet access connection (AOL, MSN, Yahoo, Earthlink). Based on commercial-grade Web filtering controls from Blue Coat Systems, K9 Web Protection is unique among content filters and it is free for home use. K9 can be configured as a porn blocker, a spyware stopper, a gambling filter or various other configurations based on our over 55 Web categories.
What I tell everyone is that there never will be a better filter than parental/adult supervision. Never let a child keep a computer in his bedroom, always keep it in a highly trafficked room, and always check their browsing history, and if they are looking at stuff they shouldn't look at, take the computer away.

The Internet is censored in China. For example if using Yahoo! in China, and you type in ';Tienanmen Square'; instead of getting pictures of the man having the standoff with the tank, you can only find other pictures, no sign of Civil disobedience. they definitly censor what is accessible if it pertains to something that is not what they want the general public to see much of. For example, if a news website was to post alot of bad things happening in China at that moment, and it made china upset, the website wouldn't be able to be accessed for a day or two until it was taken off.

WINDOWS XP: How can someone access your shared folder via internet (sharing turned on)? Can we control it?

If you are behind a router (i.e. a Netgear or Linksys), then it is quite difficult to, unless you actually allow it, in which the best way to do so is via a VPN (google ';VPN'; for more information).

By default with XP, if someone does get access, there are no passwords, and all shared folders are accessible (but a log-in password is needed for Vista). You can make a password required if you have Windows XP Professional, but not Home Edition.

The subject's overall title is network neutrality, so you can base searches off of that.

The most modest goals of cable run internet would be to do Quality of Service, which guarantees higher prioritization of time sensitive packets which include Voice over Internet (VoIP), teleconferencing and online games. However, if past experience has taught us anything it's that given the power to regulate traffic on the internet, companies will tend to be more reckless rather than less. But I would assume, if a terrorist was plotting to bomb something and the CIA was watching him on the internet that sensible people would want the government to be able to pull the plug on his communications yes?
So far I have heard of ';Obama wants to control the internet'; based on a Bill introduced by Republicans. The lies are just too brazen to be trusted.

    About the Internet LIE.

There are Republicans behind that idea. No way and no how is Obama involved. No where did article link say that Obama wants this, and he has much to do. I doubt this bill would be passed by Congress. It has to be passed first where he could veto it.

Either you're all about ';national security or your not. Also, its amusing to see the Right whine about a lack of checks and balances - they didn't have a problem when the GOP controlled both houses and the oval office for SIX YEARS.

And now listen all of the Obama supporters holler about the Patriot Act. The difference was that, in my opinion, George Bush, who was without fault, wanted to safe guard the United States. Obama and his group wants to fundamentally change our country. And this change is not for the better. George Bush, regardless of his mistakes, was a honest man. My control+enter autocomplete function in internet explorer does not work...how can i fix it?

Just to bring everyone who doesn't know about this shortcut on board, CTRL+ENTER is a very useful shortcut. It puts 'http://www' before the text in the address bar and '.com' at the end. So if I want to visit 'http://www.microsoft.com' all I have to do is type ALT+D, microsoft, CTRL+ENTER.

If it doesnt' work for you, try the microsoft site and see how to enable it. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/ie6/鈥?/a>

The better question would have been how to change what CTRL+ENTER does? Is that possible? Of course it is! To change it:

    1. Create the following registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Int鈥?Explorer\Toolbar\QuickComplete.

    2. Create the following registry value in the key above: QuickComplete REG_SZ http://www.%s.whatever

    3. Whatever is in the address bar will be inserted where the '%s' is. This example would complete 'microsoft' to 'http://www.microsoft.whatever'.

Does any one know 2 powers that the state can use to control global communications like the internet?

I'm really stuck and need help, Thank you!!Does any one know 2 powers that the state can use to control global communications like the internet?
The IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority) and the internet architesture board (i think) are Owned (in the first case) and controlled (in the latter) By The US Department of Commerce. A recent international conference on the INternet tried to wrestle some of this power away into the hands of a UN-Led body - whether this will happen is yet to be seen. Also it is worth noting that the US Govern, ment effectively invented the internet, and it is only because of its structural nature that they lost much of that control.

By the way - the IANA Issues all the I.p. addresses and .com/.co.uk/.org type postfixes.

Hope this helps.Does any one know 2 powers that the state can use to control global communications like the internet?
';The state'; meaning any government, the federal government, or state governments?

U.S. Gvt: The ';Commerce Clause'; -- Article 1 sec. 8 of the Constitution, which gives Congress the power to regulate commerce between the ';several States'; or among states and foreign governments. Global communications are used in commerce for commercial transactions, and many communciations have a ';substantial relationship to commerce.'; The construction and maintenance and charging of consumers for access are commercial transactions. Congress can regulate that.

    (2) Congress %26amp; the presidents War Powers. To the extent that global communications are used in military action, there's probably some residual authority to regulate communications in re: war.

    (3) The Treaty Power. President has the authority to make treaties and the Senate to ratify them. Treaties are superior to regular law, and subordinate to the Constitution. Treaties like GATT can include regulations related to the Internet.

    How's that?
Well, the federal government can attempt to regulate it under their interstate commerce power, and aguably under their postal power.

States are pretty limited, except under their general police power to protect the health and welfare of their citizens.
the patriots act, terrorist act 2000 uk,executive orders in which FEMA can take over the states and all comunications in the event of internation tension and financial crisis.

all acts which were implemented to suposedly protect the people against terrorism yet is being used against us.

    Huh?

    Your question makes no sense.

Is it possible to control a computer with just a network connection and no internet.?

ok the reason im asking this is because if it is possible i would like to be able to use my wireless router to connect to a dial up connection via a remote desktop and a older desktop by controlling the desktop down in my basement to so that i can browse the web wirelssly at my house without any phone cables. if u understood any of this pls help and need detaild instructions if u know howIs it possible to control a computer with just a network connection and no internet.?
Ok I think you are trying to remote into a computer that has a internet connection by using your network. This is possible with Microsoft remote desktop that can be found in the accessories menu in the start menu. an internet connection is not necessary to remote into another computer.

BTW I think it is more practice that if you have a network in place attach your internet connection to the network

Can i go to control panel and remove internet explorer and still get on the internet?

yes u can if u hav other softwareCan i go to control panel and remove internet explorer and still get on the internet?
Yes, however I would recommend you don't remove IE, being as it is part of Windows, complications may arise.

Just don't use it, use Firefox or Opera or something. Can i go to control panel and remove internet explorer and still get on the internet?
Don't remove it. I recommend using Firefox, just set FF as your default browser when it asks you the first time it starts up.

If you're referring to IE6, to my knowledge its not in the Add or Remove Programs panel, as it is integrated into Windows. Only IE7 has the ability to be removed via the Add or Remove Programs panel. Many thing are dependent on IE.
You must have a browser installed to move around on the net, whether it's Internet Explorer or any other browser. Larry RadioShack 019590
you cannot remove IE from a windows computer. IE is so worked into the operating software that it is impossible. I hate the fact but its true. Your best bet is to download another browser and set it as the Default. Then just ignore IE.
CAUTION!!!! many things are dependent on ei such as windows update and links from other web sites,, if you are going to unistall ie make sure you have a nother browser set up and running,,,,, keep in mind that ie is a microsoft product and if it came preinstalled in your computer many of your windowes componetes are dependaent on it
IE is a browser. Yes by using Firefox or other browser.

Do you think the Government should control the internet...yes or no explain?

I'm curious what people say to this... do you think they should or shouldn't and explain why you think that :DDo you think the Government should control the internet...yes or no explain?
No its our last true freedom. I don't want to live in China.Do you think the Government should control the internet...yes or no explain?
In some countries, such as France, the government controls what people can see on the internet. I don鈥檛 think this is a good idea, because in all the countries where the internet is controlled by the government, the internet is not developed, and the country is poorer.

The internet needs to be free to develop e-commerce. E-commerce can help the industry in a country to develop. In South Korea, where the internet is well developed, economic growth in recent years has been 7% per year, which is a very high rate.
Yes, I think the government should control the internet because they have a long history of running things better, cheaper and more efficiently that the private sector can.

The government also knows what we should be allowed to access and read and what we should not be reading.

They are looking out for our best interests and we should thank God for it.
    ... ABSOULTELY NOT!

The internet is finnally waking people up to alot of the wrong doings of our own government in the past... And just how screwed up it's got!

The internet is the great equalizer now... if they take that away we are just blind...

Becuase now, mass media, is REALLY MASSIVE... it's practicly one company...
No, the government already places too much under their control, the internet is just too much.
No. Like everything else they would over regulate it. Each user needs to take the necessary steps to protect themselves.
No Freedom of Speech , but you can bet your but they monitor it
Al Gore invented it do you not remember.
    No. First Amendment.
