If someone, oh, say the government, wanted to control the internet, how, logistically, would they do it?

With servers being located all over the world, and content coming from all over the world, how, realistically, does a government control the internet access of its populace? If someone, oh, say the government, wanted to control the internet, how, logistically, would they do it?
While content servers are all over, there are a few primary DNS servers. These are what resolve a name into an IP address. In other words, when you type in www.yahoo.com, these servers translate that into IP Address 123.123.123.123. Without these servers, there is no internet (well, no web sites anyway). There are only 8 or 10 of these servers, so if the governmetn wanted to control the internet, they would just have to take control of these servers. If someone, oh, say the government, wanted to control the internet, how, logistically, would they do it?
Hacking computers has become a day to minute thing. This web site itself erases questions and answers within minutes of them being posted. Reviewing what is put on the internet is really a simple process and slowing down the postings to review them for key words electronically would be an extremely simple process. Yes, there are many sites that are out of our borders, but your main connection is say internet explorer. That is all they have to key word search for content and stop the incoming based on your key word criteria.
If you or anyone you know has served in the Armed Forces then you'd know they already do. Your actions are being watched and edited when sent from computers on base. When I worked on the Wiesbaden, Germany Army Base, I was unable to send emails from Yahoo, but I could get them. I had to respond via a hotmail account I had to make. And then they edited my curse words in the emails. I only found out because people who received them told me.

P.S. China's government just enforced this so its possible.
Blocking servers from outside the country is one way. Within the country all they need do is create laws that have fines or jail time. Then turn the populace into spying on their neighbor. Could you imagine the 'reporting' is the whole internet was like yahoo answers?
I do not know how ..BUT....in some countries they do it...like Iran during the elections.......I am not into tech stuff but it can be done...why else would the liberal messiah Obama try and pass a bill that would allow him to do exactly that if he deems it an emergency?
They probably do right now.

People have a false belief that somehow the internet and cellular phones have built in security. That is absolute bull crap.
They can't control content. The U.S. is the only developed country using internet that does not have a national speed standard. Internet speed varies wildly depending on where you are. That should be addressed.
Remember the warrentless tap allowing NSA to listen our converstation, they already in control of that. Thanks to Obama and Bush! NOT!
Flick the switch?
Technically.... the government invented the internet.... so, the whole 'hysteria' about 'controlling' it is kind of nonsense.

If it wasn't for the government there would BE NO INTERNET.

We already have mass identity theft and sites like these where misinformed conservative idiots corrupt the minds of the ignorant...

Government controlling the 'internet' is the LEAST of my worries.... there wasn't even an internet 30 years ago... the world will still rotate.

I'm not addicted to this thing personally and if it fell apart.. I'd be okay.
