What are the benefits to cable companies controlling the Internet?

I'm doing a research paper about cable companies wanting to control/censor part of their Internet service to their customers. I have found plenty of information on why this is a bad thing but I can't really find any information about why this would be beneficial to customers, the companies, ect..

Please help! What are the benefits to cable companies controlling the Internet?
The subject's overall title is network neutrality, so you can base searches off of that.

The most modest goals of cable run internet would be to do Quality of Service, which guarantees higher prioritization of time sensitive packets which include Voice over Internet (VoIP), teleconferencing and online games. However, if past experience has taught us anything it's that given the power to regulate traffic on the internet, companies will tend to be more reckless rather than less.
