If you were against the Patriot Act, why are you in favor of Obama having emergency control over the internet?

They like it now because Obama does.If you were against the Patriot Act, why are you in favor of Obama having emergency control over the internet?
Because the Patriot act did not empower the federal judiciary to act as a counter to Bush's abuses.

I am still against the Patriot act and I am against Obama not having control, because unlike Republicans I can think more than one administration ahead.

Despite all logic and reason, history says that a Republican will be in the white house again, so as long as the bill allows the judiciary to review and counter as needed then I'm for it.

It probably doesn't (even though you have yet to provide a link.)If you were against the Patriot Act, why are you in favor of Obama having emergency control over the internet?
That's a straw man argument. You are assuming something that simply isn't true. I can be against both or for both. For the record, I am against both.

This isn't Obama's plan though. He didn't push for this legislation. 3 Democrats and 1 Republican got together and decided that they want this bill to go through. I think they are seeing this as something similar to the Emergency Broadcast System or something.
Because it makes it safer.

Right from the bill:

To ensure the continued free flow of commerce within the United States and with its global trading partners through secure cyber communications, to provide for the continued development and exploitation of the Internet and intranet communications for such purposes, to provide for the development of a cadre of information technology specialists to improve and maintain effective cyber security defenses against disruption, and for other purposes.CommentsClose CommentsPermalink
Who said I was in favor of it?

But if the choice is a takeover of the governments computers by, say, Korean spy services, then I'm in favor of whatever means it takes to protect our secrets.

The Patriot Act was something that was enacted to give the government more latitude into prying into American citizens private lives, ostensibly it would only apply to those thought to be security risks, and, they told us, not American citizens, that kind of power is a little too heady to allow. If they wanted to wiretap, they could apply for a warrant three days later than when they started, so the idea that they could just do it was unsettling, after all, three days is plenty of time for someone to fill out paperwork, why the need for abandoning any pretense at all, unless they didn't want any one to know who they were wiretapping, and that's not at all what we want or need.

What they did end up doing was not what they said they were going to do. The ability to listen in on citizens conversations is in direct contradiction to the Constitution, the (supposed) control of the internet in case of enemy attack isn't.
Please do not assume that because I am an Obama supporter, and a critic of the Patriot Act, that I think this bill is a good idea.

At this point it is just a bill with two sponsors. It is being criticized from all sides.

I do agree that there needs to be much more cyber security in this country.
I am a Democrat that is for the Patriot Act and I support the Cyber security Act of 2009. I am also aware that in the event of a national emergency the President can interrupt the internet any way.
Personally, I am not and have never been in favor of any legislation like the (un)Patriot(ic) Act which gives the President wide sweeping powers that are easily abused.

Again, enjoy the monster you helped create.
I think the better question would be, if you were for the patriot act, why are you against obama having emergency control over the internet?
One Term Barry voted for the PATRIOT Act renewal in 2006.
I'm not in favor of either. Besides FEMA can already do it.
not for either or to put it another way, against both

don't try to tell me what I think or believe, mini-O'Reilly
Hypocrisy
I'm not in favor of either of those things.
It is for their own good. Obama knows best
